Our study examines water stress in Chile from mid-20th century to the end of the 21st century, using novel datasets on water availability, land use, and water use. We compute a water stress index for all basins in Chile and show that rising water use significantly contributes to water stress. We also show that a drier future is expected in central Chile and that the water stress index can be used as a tool for designing adaptation strategies.

Using an operational numerical weather prediction framework, our numerical results show that TCI makes the system accurately generate new reflectivity cells and significantly improves the fractional skill score of forecasts over lead times of up to six hours by up to 10 %.

Snowfall in the Karakoram and Western Himalayas (KH) correlates negatively with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) during the winter (DJF). A wave-like pattern in the upper atmosphere, accompanied with a northward moving subtropical jet over KH, is associated with warm SST in the northwest Pacific Ocean. More frequent western disturbances (WDs) migrated north of KH region during the negative phase of PDO, resulting in increased moisture transport to the KH.
